Geothermal
|
What is Geothermal?
- A heat pump that uses the earth's temperature to heat and cool your home
- Takes advantage of the fact that four to six feet below the earth's surface the earth is a constant temperature year round
- During winter months, fluid circulating through the installed loop absorbs stored heat and carries in indoors. The indoor unit compresses the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it through your home
- In the summer months, the process reverses and expels warm air through the loop system
- It works the same as an air conditioner - only it uses the earth as the source of heat and cooling to keep your house a comfortable temperature

Pond Loops are very economical to install when a body of water is available, because excavation costs are virtually eliminated. Coils of pipe are simply placed on the bottom.
|
Horizontal Loops are often considered when adequate land surface is available. Pipes are placed in trenches that range in length from 100 to 400 feet. |
Vertical Loops are the ideal choice when available land surface is limited. Drilling equipment is used to bore small-diameter holes from 75 to 300 feet deep. |
Open Loops use groundwater as a direct energy source. In ideal conditions, an open-loop application can be the most economical type of geothermal system. |

| Why Geothermal?
Long Term Cost Savings
-
Geothermal systems use a renewable energy source of heat transfer to control the temperature of your house, so you save on monthly fuel costs
-
The federal government, along with many local governments and utilities offer rebates to lower the cost of installing a geothermal system
-
You can save up to 72% of your annual energy costs when compared to a typical high efficiency, 93% efficient gas furnace with a 13 SEER air conditioner (US Department of Energy)
-
The typical payback period can vary depending on a number of factors, but can be as little as 3 years

Environmentally Friendly
-
The use of geothermal heat pumps lowers electricity demand by approximately 1kW per ton of capacity
-
Geothermal heating and cooling systems can reduce energy consumption and corresponding emissions by more than 40%
-
Geothermal systems eliminate more than 5.8 million metric tons of CO2 annually
